Media Center Basics

An actual Home Media Center (comparing to HTPC apps, XBMC etc.) is supposed to have these functions:

  • Show which subtitle / audio language has been selected (with d-pad up and down) NEW
  • Screensaver: fade, full screen visualization or position changing playback info NEW
  • Display(&search) information about the selected/playing media file (info in id3 tags, exported XBMC nfo files, album covers, movie and TV Show posters etc.) NEW
  • Search online media with on-screen keyboard, bookmark/favourites (shoutcast, youtube etc.) NEW
  • Scan all audio/video and place them as "All Music" or "All Videos". NEW
  • Selecting the root folder and having all sub folders added to playlist for music playback. NEW

Controls

  • Address bar / Yahoo bar / Breadcrumbs when browsing folders NEW
  • Change sort order in file lists: name, ext, date, size ascending and descending at least NEW
  • For music playback, make left and right on the D-Pad be "Previous track" and "Next track" (for scrolling quickly, the scroll bar is there for a reason) NEW
  • On-screen keyboard for numeric settings, or at least the ability to change the value in both directions, without limits and to reset it to the default value. (subtitle delay should be possible to set to eg. -300s or +180s) NEW
  • Wrap-around file list when using the d-pad (scrolling past the bottom takes you to the top and vice versa) REJECTED

Settings

  • Support for setting subtitle position ACCEPTED
  • Setting to disable internal DVD drive on Wiis that are incapable of playing any DVD anyhow (it is a trouble to skip trough it from Music to online, always gives error) NEW
  • Support buttons on the nunchuk / Classic Pro to have more buttons available for direct access to functions NEW
  • An option to continue using WiiMC, even if no valid sd/usb devices are found - my flash drive gives this error when alone, so I have to put an sd card in to play a DVD. REJECTED (not possible)

Software features

  • Audio visualizations NEW
  • Better randomizer for shuffle playback (replaying a song only 2 songs later when you have over 100 songs = FAIL) - while technically "random", it's pointless and just plain annoying in practicality.NEW
  • Longer visible tag info, mainly on the screen saver with considerable unused room (example: "Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time" by itself gets cut off) NEW
  • Prevent HD playback, prevent crashing upon accidental trying to play HD files NEW
  • Prompt where to exit when home is pressed: HBC, Wii Menu or shut down NEW
  • Replay Gain tags support NEW
  • Vorbis comments support (ID3 tag equivalent for FLAC and OGG vorbis files) NEW
  • Windows Network browsing and/or UPNP support (complex problem, requires implementing a completely different protocols than what is needed to access specified shares) NEW
  • Network File System (NFS) client NEW
  • ext2/ext3 filesystem support NEW
  • Because the CPU is not powerful enough to decode/downscale HD videos: Downscale it while showing a progress bar, save it on the sd card (or the usb drive) and then play it NEW
    • Not sure how you'd expect this to work; if it can't play in realtime, you'd have to wait longer than the playing time for the file to be converted (not to mention that a downscaled uncompressed file would be huge). Tueidj 23:29, 20 August 2011 (CEST)
    • I don't think this is possible for the Wii, it could result in a code dump, because even a fast computer takes a long while to convert a video or downscale it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abckookooman (talkcontribs) 22:19, 22 October 2011 (CEST)
  • Aspect ratio: keep original ratio when playing back a file with a nonstandard ratio (i.e. 5:3) rather than stretching it to fit closest aspect ratio. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abckookooman (talkcontribs) 22:19, 22 October 2011 (CEST)

Hardware support

  • Support for USB / BT keyboard REJECTED
  • External DVD device support REJECTED
  • Support for Gamecube controller(s) NEW

Audio codecs requests

  • Support for .au files? NEW
  • Support for .tta files? NEW

Not possible

  • CD playback: Wii hardware cannot do that, it is DVD only.
  • 720p and 1080p playback or downscale: Wii hardware cannot output more than 480p and CPU power is not enough to even decode, not to mention downscaling.
  • Deinterlace: CPU has not got enough power / mplayer filters are not optimized.
  • Actual Stop button: to stop (not pause) - Not needed, you just have to understand the playback logic described above.

I cannot wait to try this! I hope the volume control for DVDs is better than MPlayerCE. -Kage Korosu 20:12, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

I love this app. It is a great improvement over the older MPlayerCE. One feature I would like to see is, in the music section, the app compile a list of artists and albums on first use so that we can have a dynamic "library" similar to the way the iPod works, instead of having to browse through folders. Also, album art would be a great addition too :). Micmac creations 04:37, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Simply Fantastic --TitMouse 19:48, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Doesn't Support Replay Gain tags

I am sad. Nintendo Maniac 64 07:04, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanx, very good job!

hi i would like to say thank you for making this hack for wii, i had no problems so far and the dvd playback is the best i ever saw:D keep up the very good work;) -supermariovb64 01:12, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Not a hack, (Suppose you could call it one, since Nintendo would rather you didn't use it :P) but it's a program which has been heavily coded/optimised/changed whilst in development for a while. It's nice that people appreciate such programs :) --djdynamite123 06:56, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you, been waiting for a nice media player like this

The player is really classy, would like to see a bit more on the music player screen though, the right hand side is just crying out for ALBUM ART! Knob 12:05, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Before we add more features like that, I think it's more important to make sure the existing ones are stable and perform well. --Tantric 17:58, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Subtitles

So far the interface is a lot better than MPlayer CE, including SMB support. Except two features don't work for me: subtitles and USB keyboards --Unbibium 21:51, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

USB keyboard will never be supported. There's several reasons for this, but the simplest explanation is that it adds additional code and processing that's truly unnecessary. --Tantric 23:24, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Help!

How do you play dvd,s when ever i try to play one it says invalid dvd? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiiqwertyuiop (talkcontribs) 13:19, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

When did you purchase your Wii? Most newer Wiis cannot play DVD's due to a new drive used by Nintendo. Sm 14:02, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
Don't forget to install IOS202, or it won't work - tj_cool 20:03, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

File formats

Should we add those to the wiki page? They can easily be found in settings.h of the source - tj_cool 20:03, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

More music types?

Virtually any format? Have you any consideration for all the chippy/banky types? :) DragonMinded put a bunch of work into supporting a lot of the tracked formats (DragonMedia_Player#Supported_Formats), and generously shares his sourcecode of it. Do we have a chance of anyone adding side support for these? That would be cool, especially in that they could now finally be loaded from across the network. --Zandro 20:39, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

No chance. This is a port of MPlayer. So WiiMC supports most of what MPlayer supports. --Tantric 22:25, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

Picture Viewer

Nice one. Any chance we'll get zoom and move features for the picture viewer? Wiedster 10:53, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

No comment? Or am I just too stupid to use the picture viewer properly? Wiedster 19:12, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Has been discussed on the forum -- tj_cool 08:47, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
thank you. wasn't resolved though Wiedster 12:42, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

IOS 202 Source?

Is there any source code for your IOS 202? --Mu mind 02:17, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

It's just Hermes v5 with a 57 base. The only thing custom is the installer. --Tantric 06:49, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Screenshot

I was looking for a screenshot and I found this. Is this really WiiMC? I can't test it, because my Wii is broken since last year... Screenshot --Duhow 05:55, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Yep, that's it. --Mu mind 21:57, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
More screenshots are in the Gallery -- tj_cool 07:20, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Link disambiguation page to here?

should WiiMC have a link from this page? --Yossi 22:09, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Probably, because Geexbox is linked there as well -- tj_cool 07:20, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Videos don't load

I have always enjoyed watching vids on a big screen with Wiimc, but now i get a stack dump whenever i try to load a video... I really don't know why, can anybody help? -- NekoJin 10:03, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Longer subtitle delay times

Is it possible to have subtitle delay times longer than -2.0/+2.0 seconds? Sometimes I get bad subs and need to resync them on the fly. -- -Gustavo 18:55, 01 July 2010 (UTC-3)

IOS202 necessity gone/going?

Is there a new WiiMC coming without the need for IOS202? I notice it has been removed from the Wiki page, e.g. in the "media playback" section it no longer says "DVD playback (requires IOS202)", just "DVD playback", and the installation instructions are gone. Is there a new version which will make use of the HW_AHBPROT flags in HBC 1.0.7 instead? --SifJar 17:31, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Why'd you totally ditch IOS202?

I understand that since IOS58 is an official Nintendo IOS, and that it came with 4.3, most people would prefer it, but I'm lazy and already have 202. Is there any reason, software impossibility or otherwise, that there can't be an option to use one or the other? 00:34, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Have you read this post? --Spec 01:15, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
The simple answer is, supporting both is a waste of energy on my part. I'm not going to do this just because "you're lazy". --Tantric 01:30, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

update broke what it was going to fix

I updated the WiiMC and now it no longer recognizes my external hard drive. It is a WD 1TB(good for all the anime i have on hand) on an NTFS partition (trust me i've tried switching it to fat32 for homebrew but no luck)btw if someone tells me to make sure ios58 is installed i have checked and it is.--Trigger ftu 00:18, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Download Site Hacked?

I just tried to download this, and the site looks like it has been hacked by some Turkish hacker! HELP! TiMeBoMb 00:08, 20 September 2010 (CEST)

Until the page is fixed, it looks like Google has it cached HERE. TiMeBoMb 00:15, 20 September 2010 (CEST)
Well that sucks :( I've undone the hack but I don't know how it happened - I guess the host got hacked. --Tantric 01:41, 20 September 2010 (CEST)

WTV File Format?

Are there any plans to make the new Windows 7 Media Center video recording format (.wtv) playable in WiiMC? TiMeBoMb 21:50, 22 September 2010 (CEST)

DVR-MS File Format

It appears that the .dvr-ms filetype is no longer supported. I just did a clean install of WiiMC and tried to watch a Windows Vista Media Center recording (.dvr-ms), and it would not even show up in WiiMC as playable. I've edited the Video Playback file format on the main page accordingly. TiMeBoMb 21:50, 22 September 2010 (CEST)

USB Issue with 1.1.0

Hi, I have just installed version 1.1.0 This version failed to attach my 0.5TB USB disk. The previous release worked fine. What could be wrong. I see the following happing. When I started WiiMC I see a black screen, the USB harddisk shows disk activity. This activity continues forever. Looks like that the hole disk is read. After waiting for 3 minutes I switch off the disk the WiiMC opening screen is showed. The same problem issues happens in the Snes9x GX 4.2.5, FCE Ultra GX 3.2.3, Visual Boy Advance GX so it looks like a bug in the FAT library. Looking forward to your response? Wplaat 19:01, 11 October 2010 (CEST)

Hi, thanks for the fast response. I hope this issue will be fix in the usbstorage.c (were can i post a issue for this) as soon as possible. In the mean time i have rollback the installation. Now running again on previous release! Wplaat 19:13, 12 October 2010 (CEST)

"Now Loading" dialog

Instead of having a black "Now Loading" pop-up every time I add stuff to a playlist, is it possible to move to the bottom-right corner on the screen, like notifications? You created an awesome player, by the way. Mp3c 05:32, 15 February 2011 (CET)

DVD Language

I try to load up this DVD, I went into its menu and set the language to Japanese with English subtitles but when I start it up, Its in English. Higurashimerlin 20:35, 5 February 2012 (CET)

WiiMC website problems

For the second time in several days, the WiiMC website went down. It's back up now, but I'm worried that it could happen again.

Whenever the website is down, the online media features of WiiMc do not work. Whoever is in charge of the website needs to do a better job of maintaining it so it doesn't go down all of the time. Trilakor 23:30, 27 September 2012 (CEST)Trilakor

Alternative Icon

While Tantric preferred to stick with the current WiiMC icon, I made an alternative one, and thought I should share it as I've already done the work. WiiMC 3.png

Youtube issues

With Youtube, there are some issues: At times, instead of the "buffering" text appearing, WiiMC stops and won't do ANYTHING. Sometimes the video list appears like this: version:7 type:video (Insert video name here) and so on.

Until these issues are fixed, I won't use WiiMC.--4Tails4 19:28, 21 May 2012 (CEST)

Will the app ever gonna have a time control on Youtube? That and the possibility to change page list Mc123
