Screenshots

There really, really, really need to be screenshots for each of these themes.... --Mr. Reaper 09:14, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Seconded --SifJar 09:23, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Done, though they aren't perfect quality, it's good and you can recognize eevrything. --Superyoshi 10:39, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Do we really have to use pictures with failapps like cIOScrap and friends on it? dhewg 10:46, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Here you go, new pictures. --Superyoshi 10:54, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Ah, that looks nice ;) thanks dhewg 10:57, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for these, looking good. --SifJar 15:01, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Redone because I can. — Extrems (talkcontribs) 16:44, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Subpage for creating themes?

I made a quick How-To on installing Themes and creating them. Then I thought about a sub-apge describing the creation of themes in-depth (like where all the images are used). Comments on that, and the little guide I wrote? --Superyoshi 15:38, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

I'd say it'd be a nice idea to have a little how-to, even though it'd pretty simple when you download a theme. Only thing I don't 100% understand is the progress bar colours in the theme.xml... Still, it'd be cool to have a little guide --SifJar 19:03, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Screenshot tool?

I'm guessing that a screenshot tool has been created for themes, as all the sample themes have the same "lorem ipsum" stuff as the apps, so I was wondering, is this tool available publicly, or if not, will it be? --SifJar 22:03, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

No, I'm doing this manually. — Extrems (talkcontribs) 22:15, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Oh OK. --SifJar 22:22, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
That would actually be a quite good idea. You point some tool to the right directory and it takes what needs and puts it together as if it was the real HBC... anyone up for it? Should be not that hard to create --Superyoshi 08:14, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
I was thinking of maybe trying to do it. I'd just need to work out the location to put each image, and what all images are used in the screen shots. I'll try and work some stuff out later, see what I can come up with --SifJar 10:55, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
I have released v1.0 of ThemeShooter, it can generate screenshots of HBC themes. There is no text (yet), but all images necessary are implemented, so you should be able to get a rough idea of what theme's look like. --SifJar 14:00, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Favorite

What is your favorite theme? I don't know if this is appropriate on a talk page, but I was wondering. I like the Dark Vista and my Cookie theme. (of course I like my own =P) --Jrcolonial98 13:23, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

I still use DarkWaters, though Colours is a close second. --Superyoshi 17:01, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
I like the halo 3 theme. who made that one? they are awesome ;) --Stonga 21:00, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Downloading themes

How about adding the themes to the Homebrew Browser? So you can download from your Wii. Randomdude 23:42, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

sounds like a good idea, i cast my vote for this! --Stonga 23:47, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Thirded. --Jrcolonial98 00:15, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
I love this idea, I'd like to see my themes in the HBC as well as be able to download other peoples easier.
This has been confirmed here. --Abeckring 22:56, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
None of my themes appear to show up on Homebrew Browser. Is there something I'm supposed to do to get them on there, or what?Crackedthesky 21:29, 1 September 2010 (CEST)
If I had a hacked wii I'd tell you. --Abeckring 04:29, 2 September 2010 (CEST)

Voting Crap Themes off the Island

I foresee a LOT of themes getting created, but let's not start stockpiling every crappy theme that anyone comes up with.... So I say we use this section to vote bad themes off the site. But only REALLY bad ones (only one has been removed so far).

So if you see a truly terrible theme, vote here to have it removed. --Mr. Reaper 05:00, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Bad idea, it wouldn't be fair to just take someones theme off. If you don't like it, don't download it plain and simple.
It's fair, since a wiki is a collaborative effort -- it's created by the group of users. So if many users think an entry is not worthwhile, it can be removed by the group. I'm not suggesting any single user just goes in and deletes themes he alone doesn't like.... I didn't want to do so by myself, so the option is here to "vote." --Mr. Reaper 06:30, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Better idea: Vote for the best themes to be moved to their own category on the top? Roku93 05:10, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
I like this idea, I vote that all windows7 themes, dark vista, and mac starry sky get sent to the top. Or we could wait for themes to be added to HBB so we can look at most popular download. --Abeckring 06:41, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
I thought the idea was to get GOOD themes at the top? --SifJar 21:50, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Copyright Infringement

Editing a copyright image to a certain degree VOIDS Copyright Laws. For more info Google it.

  1. Cropping
  2. Editing
We're not selling anything either so I dont see how Copyright comes into play. If you use part of someone's work be sure to credit them. Randomdude 06:15, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
HackMii Blog Quote: Since Wiibrew.org has proven to be a great repository for applications, we think it is a great place to store the accompanying themes. As usual, with Wiibrew, please don’t upload copyrighted content. For themes, this means: No copyrighted imagery, neither of photographic nor illustrative nature. Also, I would think that it is rather pointless to upload background-only themes. Also, could you link me to an article, I can't find one. --Superyoshi 08:38, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

I also would really like to see a reliable source for this outlandish claim. Also, copyright does not have to do anything with financial gain, and crediting someone does not nullify his copyright. --Drmr 05:45, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Drmr, would posting an external link to a theme be breaking your guy's copyright rule? --Abeckring 20:57, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
As much as I hate to have to spell this out to you: Yes. It would. Do you see links to copyrighted/illegal material anywhere else on the site? Would it suit Wiibrew with its "no illegal material" policy? What do you think? --Drmr 00:53, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for asking, jeeze. Next time I'll just go on and do something without knowing if its against the rules or not. --Abeckring 18:17, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
The usage of copyright images seems to be confusing quite a lot of people. Perhaps what is meant could be more clear? Because certain themes are being taken down and others left up. If we're going to be as strict as possible on this, then should the "Franchises" section of the theme page in turn not even exist? Anything anyone uses, even if it was hand-drawn, would be in some form of copyright violation. I just uploaded a Legend of Zelda theme I made, and I assume it'll be taken down pretty shortly. Every image used was taken from Photobucket (or a similar fileshare site) and every one of them was very heavily edited by myself, be it cropping, resizing, recoloring, removing or adding elements etc, but I don't know whether I'm in violation as some themes which clearly use copyrighted images are allowed to stay while others are promptly removed. Are we talking about images which clearly have a little c within in a circle on them, or what? If not, I don't even have any way of knowing whether the images I've used are copyrighted. Also, I think Fair Use laws play a certain role; if the image is not explicitly copyrighted or is being used in a heavily-edited form for non-commercial use, it is generally not considered copyright infringement. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use#Fair_use_on_the_Internet) Sorry for the noobish discussions, I've never participated in a wiki before, this is all very new to me.Crackedthesky 06:11, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Besides the point this is a fucking homebrew site so... I doubt we're going to hurt anyone's credibility... or in any matter sued... its not being sold so it doesnt break any laws... copyright... pfff Randomdude 07:08, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
It may be a load of crap... but I dont recommend breaking WiiBrew rules... so just add them to HBB...Randomdude 07:12, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
I don't think it's a load of crap at all. The rules are there for a reason, and a good one. I just believe they could be more clear. Here we have some themes being taken down, while others are being left up, and yet more are being requested (like Tron, Halo, etc.) so the limits of what is or isn't acceptable aren't very well-defined. I also believe that pretty much everything I've seen being done so far is well within the terms of Fair Use rules.Crackedthesky 18:59, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

My Halo: Recah theme's background was NOT copyrighted. it was edited, cropped, and had no sign of copyright. do I really need to change it? --Stonga 19:28, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

See, that's what I'm wondering, though. Technically, the minute something is uploaded to the internet, it's copyrighted. But Fair Use says that copyrights don't count under certain circumstances, and I believe the way these images are used in these themes qualifies as Fair Use.Crackedthesky 21:08, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

I still don't know how the rules could be any clearer, but I've clarified the rules a bit more (which is more of a re-iteration in different words). I sincerley hope this ends this tiresome discussion. If it doesn't, I'm afraid we'll have to resort to more drastic measures. --Drmr 22:27, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

This isn't an excuse just a curious question. Can you upload copyrighted material if it is copyrighted by you? Don't get mad, I'm not trying to upload copyrighted material. --Abeckring 00:20, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
This is a curious question, as anything you create yourself is automatically copyrighted by you. --Drmr 06:18, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Better Skinning

  1. Customize Wii Cursor
  2. Background Music
    • No current plans --Drmr
  3. Custom Font
  4. More Customizable Buttons
  5. Replace Bubbles with different images (Done)
  6. XML file that lets you edit how many bubbles are displayed and how they behave. (such as reversing the direction they float)
  7. The ability to have different sized images than normal
    • No current plans --Drmr
  8. The ability to change the placement of the buttons and such
    • No current plans --Drmr
  9. Custom sounds
    • No current plans --Drmr
  10. .apng support(animated png)
    • Highly unlikely --Drmr
  11. Different text color for dialog box. (Could really help on some themes I'm trying to finish)

For an Image Resizor use WiiXplorer's Image Convertor.

6 and 7 would be great for Matrix themes and more.

"Custom HBC Logo" is certainly not going to happen, for obvious reasons. You already can replace the bubble images. --Drmr 05:48, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

I made a halo: reach theme --Stonga 18:16, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
When HBB adds theme support you can add it there. And no I mean Arkham city. Randomdude 04:59, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Ok sorry, I'm oldschool. Hard to keep up with latest batman stuff.

BTW, I definitely think they are gonna add the themes to the HBB. --Abeckring 05:17, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm going to do the NES theme.(Making sure nobody steals it.) --Abeckring 01:33, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Aww damnit...I just started on an NES theme last night....gay. Oh well, I guess I can do the Assassin's Creed theme. RazorChrist/TronCycles 11:45, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure they're not going to be the same exact theme so make a NES one...
P.S. I want TronCycles Wii... Really badly! I love that game... Tron Evolution is coming out and I'm getting it....--Randomdude 16:47, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah I might go ahead and make it, I had some good ideas for it. As for TronCycles...I want to finish it badly...haha. I'm just stuck on it at the moment, and had to put it on hold due to life. I'll pick it back up when I can. RazorChrist/TronCycles 17:12, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
@Abeckring Awesome job on the Retro NES theme. Definitely downloading that one. RazorChrist/TronCycles 01:33, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, btw I updated it a minute ago so you might want to re-download. --Abeckring 02:11, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I have alot of TRON images, since I'm working on a game for it, so I'll start working on the TRON theme. Would you guys rather have one based on the new movie or just a general Tron theme? RazorChrist/TronCycles 19:27, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Both! :) Randomdude 02:50, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Well the TRON theme is finished, but I need to make some adjustments to a few of the boxes. I should have the theme uploaded by tomorrow morning. RazorChrist/TronCycles 02:05, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
The TRON theme is finally up. Sorry it took so long. RazorChrist/TronCycles 12:38, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Just to let everyone know, I am now taking requests on my talk page. --Abeckring 20:56, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

imma copy you and say im taking requests too! --Stonga 22:37, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

You can add them to HBB when teknecal implements it. Randomdude 02:03, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Dude, I'm talking about requests to make certain themes. --Abeckring 16:29, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

I know it wasn't exactly requested, but I made an Xbox 360 Dashboard theme. It started out as a pet project and I basically ended up spending a ton of time on it, but the stuff I did at the beginning (like the background) I hadn't put as much effort into. If anyone wants to take it and make a better one without using copyrighted images (I made everything in it from scratch, besides the obvious Xbox logo) feel free to use anything in there. Credit would be nice (not that it'll get me very far in life,) especially if you use the network icon or the usb gecko icon... I made those from scratch and they surprisingly took forever, haha.Crackedthesky 06:42, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

I've been working on a portal based theme for a while now, it was requested by me from another website. I will hopefully do a release on the themes I've been working on sometime next year. --Abeckring 15:14, 20 December 2010 (CET)

Question pertaining to certain themes.

I don't want to sound rude/mean or anything, but the Sonic/DBZ themes contain copyrighted material, do they not? If so, then I'd like to know why they are still up, as my SMG theme was taken down on these grounds -- and it doesn't seem fair to me that these two get to stay up as have been in this particular situation.

If someone would kindly answer this question, I'd appreciate it. Thank you. :) Sonicdude41 07:47, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

There's a discussion about Copyright running here: #Copyright Infringement As soon it's done, we either delete the others or you may re-add yours. --Superyoshi 08:07, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Seeing as how nothing has come out of that discussion, topped with the fact that yet another Mario theme has popped up on the Themes page, would it be all right if I re-add mine -- at least for the time being? Sonicdude41 08:11, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
I would say it's okay because others are doing this too. --Abeckring 02:13, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I don't get it, are the two rules (no copyrighted images, no background-only themes) not clear enough? --Drmr 05:51, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm sorry, it won't happen again. I'll remember to delete copyrighted material if I see it. --Abeckring 16:27, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Categories

Before this thing gets out of the hand we should make some categories so people can actually find something here. I see a need for following categories: Roku93 17:05, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

- Variations, already done, which is awesome.

- Computer/Console OS/Other interface familiar elsewhere (Windows, OS X, Linux, GC, Wii, MiiConsola etc.)

- Brands or something, not sure how to call it in english. (Dragonballs, Sonic, Pokémon, Matrix, Pac-Man etc.)

- Other/Original work (Sky, Cookie, Minty, Carbon, Noisy etc.)

- Something to add? Feel free.

NEEDS TOC! Randomdude 18:01, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

For the one you listed as brands just call it Games/Movies/Franchises. --Abeckring 20:14, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Matrix Theme

Since everyone has been ignoring the copyright rules, I plan on adding real matrix code to my theme and removing the green bar at the bottom of the screen. Tell me what you think. Any ideas? --Abeckring 20:35, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

do it, sounds cool --Stonga 20:45, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I'll probably release next week. I wanna wait and see if other people have more ideas. You'll be saying it sounds cool if Team Twiizer ever adds animated png support. (I don't know for sure if animated png works, could someone with this sort of knowledge test it?) --Abeckring 22:24, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I highly doubt they work, but i cannot test as I have no way of making animated PNG images. --Stonga 04:03, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
I can send you one through email. --Abeckring 20:00, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Then why don't you just test it? --Stonga 00:54, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
I dont have a hacked wii, read my user page. --Abeckring 16:26, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
Umm then why are u here? not trying to be mean... --Stonga 16:55, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm here to make themes, I used to have a hacked wii, I plan on hacking it again eventually. Did you even read my user page? --Abeckring 20:21, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
no lol --Stonga 21:19, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Okay, might be a bit longer. Creating matrix code is harder than it looks. Yes I'm making it from scratch to avoid copyright issues, but I'm trying to make it look realer than what it is now. --Abeckring 22:53, 22 August 2010 (UTC) Release will be tomorrow, also I'm releasing in both black and white text to fulfill some suggestions. White text is for people who have a hard time seeing the black, but black text will remain the default download. --Abeckring 22:00, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Matrix v2.0 Released --Abeckring 22:53, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Removal of themes containing copyrighted images

The page quite clearly states: no copyrighted images. This is not open to discussion. If such an upload has not been removed yet (this is a Wiki after all) it does not imply that this rule has been suspended. --Drmr 06:11, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Could you at least warn us before you take our themes down, so we can change the copyrighted imagery? --Stonga 14:57, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
I don't see why you need a warning, if you upload a theme with copyrighted images it WILL be removed. And if you change the copyrighted images, surely its a different theme, perhaps with a few vague similarities? Anyway, if your theme is removed, that's your cue to replace images if you want. No need for a warning IMO --SifJar 15:03, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Stonga has a point if your somone who likes to create themes your gonna wanna clear up room for more on your computer. (nobody likes alot of clutter) Anyway, if your theme gets deleted and you dont have a backup your screwed. There should be a 12-24 hour warning set in place. --Abeckring 20:27, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Quit trying to make up excuses just to bend the rules. Especially rather silly ones about not being able to keep a backup of a few hundred kilobytes.
There will be no warning about content that has no place on Wiibrew in the first place. Wiibrew is a public repository. As such, it would do the public a disservice by holding copyrighted material and thus potentially open the whole repository to legal consequences. I really don't see what's unclear about the practice and its rationale. --Drmr 00:48, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
You and your god foresaken almighty rules... :P Randomdude 07:15, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

RuneScape Theme

Ok, so I noticed that my RuneScape Theme was removed due to copyright violations. If there is anyone who would still like this theme just comment your email below and I'll send it to you. Or if they allow it I'll post a link to a download mirror. --Abeckring 20:03, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Uh, no. This completely defeats the point of having the rule and removing it. Why on earth do you think it would be allowed to post a mirror or run an email service for it? --SifJar 17:22, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
dude i was already told no on the download mirror, but I can run it through email all i want. Not your email meaning you have no control over what I do with it. --Abeckring 17:38, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
That's as may be, but you can't run an "e-mail order" service from WiiBrew. That's as much a violation of the rules as posting it here or posting a mirror. --SifJar 21:20, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
How about IRC? Randomdude 21:59, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
Not on any of the wiibrew IRC channels (e.g. #wiihelp or #wiidev), but if you start your own IRC channel its up to you what you do. But you can't mention such an IRC channel here. --SifJar 22:08, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
BS... just PM him the link... Randomdude 22:11, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
So how do you PM people on wiibrew? --Abeckring 01:15, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
You can't, as far as I know, except inside the wiibrew forums. RazorChrist/TronCycles 02:06, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
fforums.wiibrew.org seems to be offline. --Abeckring 02:25, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
On IRC!!!!! Randomdude 07:16, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
That may indeed work, but that doesn't mean we condone advising it. The same could be said for warez loaders, and even warez. "I can't post a link here, but PM me on IRC and I'll give you a link" - That sort of thing shouldn't be on WiiBrew. That makes us as bad as GBAFail with their auto-reply emails. --SifJar 08:27, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Dummy Theme

Can someone make like a dummy theme that has all the changeable images in the right sizes and file types, but the images are blank so you can edit them? This would be really helpful. --Stonga 16:15, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Already on it, im assuming you mean completely blank images. --Abeckring 16:41, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
yep. when youre done upload it, im sure it doesnt break any rules. --Stonga 17:10, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Uh, you can just download the HBC classic theme and edit each image. It has all the images possible to change. --SifJar 20:04, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Cool i'll even include a map. --Abeckring 20:08, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
ty --Stonga 20:32, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Okay, the template has been uploaded. --Abeckring 22:49, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Description Limit

There needs to be a limit placed on the description to keep the themes page nice and organized, and avoid clutter. I think Crackedthesky went a little overboard on his description with the Xbox theme. --Abeckring 19:59, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Done. --Abeckring 02:27, 26 August 2010 (CEST)

# of downloads

Is it possible to show how many times the theme has been downloaded? That would be helpful to see which ones are most popular. --Jrcolonial98 21:04, 29 August 2010 (CEST)

Direct downloads aren't tracked by the wiki software. — Extrems (talkcontribs) 21:42, 29 August 2010 (CEST)
Okay. --Jrcolonial98 21:53, 29 August 2010 (CEST)

umm... what?

someone changed the beginning of the page to a different language (spanish i think). was this supposed to happen? --Stonga 00:24, 17 September 2010 (CEST)

no some idiot who doesn't know how to make a spanish version changed it. --Abeckring 04:58, 17 September 2010 (CEST)

Problem with Theme?

I run Homebrew Channel 1.0.6 on my Wii, and I tried to change my theme to the Tron theme. However, the app did not show up on my list of applications on the Homebrew Channel. Is this because I need to update my Homebrew Channel to 1.0.7 or higher? If so, should the Homebrew Channel/Themes page be edited to reflect this requirement? —Preceding unsigned comment added by UltimateKuriboh (talkcontribs)

Yes, you have an old HBC which doesn't have the theme feature. Update it and you can use themes. --wiisixtyfour 22:38, 13 December 2010 (CET)

Uploading a theme

I know, i may be kinda stupid, but i made this HBC Half-Life theme and i don't know how to upload it here. soooo how do i upload pls
