Error/Bug Messenger

A program that alerts of errors/bugs while channel is running and sends error reports to the maker of said channel or application.

Bathroom Scale

A program using the Wii Balance Board to figure out your flab. If any.

A DVD Program

A program that uses the Wii's DVD drive to play DVDs, controls appear at bottom like Opera ones? Codec could be one of the restricted linux ones.

Flash Drive Support

Booting to a USB flash drive in the home brew channel.

USB Hard Drive Support

The ability to boot to a hard drive via the HBC and run it that way. SD cards have MANY issues with file corruption, and very limited read/write cycles. HDs don't. Perhaps a hack for the Wii itself making it use USB HDs instead of the crappy NAND flash memory.

USB DVD/CD Rom Drive Support

The ability to access an external DVD/CD Rom drive connected threw the USB ports in the back. This could be a very quick, and easy work around the Wii's DVD encryption system.

NFS File system support

The ability to allow a home brew application to mount a networked file system from a local source. This could be a little more possible then trying to hack the USB connection for external Hard Drives/DVD Drives. Considering we already have access to the Wii's network connection. It may be slow for application that wish to access the NFS a lot, and often, but for other application that only load a file once it would be a perfect solution to small SD cards.

Good in theory, bad in practice, well part of it. You won't be able to just load the entire file, say it is a movie converted to .avi that is ~700mb. The Wii has 64MB, where should I store all that extra data, in my dusty PS2? I would still use this even if it accesses it a lot. Virtual Console Demos

These are demos from various Virtual Console Games. Sort of like SSBB Masterpieces, only the player gets more time. Or a better idea would be that the player would only get to play a level or two. Whether these demos are homemade or original, I think this would be a nice idea. (We can have a larger variety of controllers as well.) [Feel free to remove this idea if it is illegal or pirating in any way.

File Downloader

Just a simple file downloader!

Mii Renderer

A program (with source) that allows you to view the Miis on your Wii (very useful for homebrew that wish to use the Mii API)

Interesting idea... check out the Homebrew apps/Mii Extractor, there should be a start there to at least get the information :)

Photo Extractor

Some means to extract photos from the Photo Channel and save them to an SD card or a computer that normally are limited to Wii use, like Metroid Prime 3 screen shots and Check Mii Out screen shots.

WiiConnect24

Basically any app that does something while the Wii is on Standby. It would probably be hard and dangerous, as it would require modifying the Wii filesystem, but if it became more easy (using libraries) people would start developing things for it.

Yoshi's Topsy Turvey Engine

The engine from Yoshi's Topsy Turvey. You could tilt the Wii Remote to tilt the world / stage, while using the other buttons on the Wii Remote as usual. This could be used in other Homebrew Games, such as adventures, or a new kind of Ballion.

Technically, that engine had only digital tilting and could only detect if it was tilted left, tilted right or simply not tilted. The idea's great, but only if it gets proper analog tilt. --00Davo 04:41, 20 July 2008 (CEST)

My suggestion is to allow for front SD, or even better External USB hard drive support to load the disk image, config file, etc. and to have USB keyboard and Wimote support. It would also be great to be able to use the USB ports, Front SD, Bluetooth, DVD Drive, and integrated wifi from within the emulated machine. It also requires at least 1.5GB of hard disk space, excluding documents, so we have to load disk images off usb devices. Google Earth Clone - Nasa World Wind Port

I think it would be nice to browse through Google Earth on my TV using the Wiimote... It would also be nice for people that don´t like computers, but like Google Earth (you know, your father would love it!)

I want to work on this project, but I would like some help, even from no-experienced coders.

What I have so far: I know where I can get the sattelite imagery... I plan to use the NASA databases, the same used by World Wind. Soon I will code a simple demo to get some imagery from the web and show it on the Wii.

Where do I need some help: I don't know how to use the Wii GX. I have some experience on OpenGL on Windows, but I can´t find a documentation on the Wii GX, and I need to know how to render the textures on a globe, and how to rotate/pan/zoom. I will also need some help on memory management.

My father gets confused by the toaster, I don't think he'd love it! ;) Seriously though with the number and size of images your talking about you are going to need to figure out an image/texture caching solution before you even start looking at the API. Description: A text viewing app, plain and simple.

Motivation: If I work at my PC and can't use it at that moment to view a documentation, i could watch it instead on my Wii.

Controlled by: Wiimote

    • HOME: back to HBC
    • D-Pad: use up/down to scroll up/down line by line, use left/right to scroll up/down page by page

I'm not sure under what situation you'd actually want to do this? If your wanting to view a text file on the wii it means:
a) You don't have your computer to hand
b) You've already got your text file on your SD Card
c) Getting to your computer/turning the PC on, will be slower than turning the wii on

VNC Client

I would love to see some form of VNC client for the wii. I think it would be great to be able to control my main computer from the living room without the aid of my bashed up old laptop.

I know this is already possible, by using LogMeIn. I have tried this and I verify that this works, but is a little slow. I think it should have USB keyboard support, yet I have no way to test that. Intructions can be found Here. --Westy92 00:47, 17 June 2008 (CEST)

This wouldn't work. PCs use SVGA, with a MINIMUM resolution of 800x600. The Wii has no HD support, meaning it has only one resolution, standard def, 640x480. See the problem now? Wrong resolutions. (360 and PS3 have adequate resolutions)

Actually it is entirely possible. Just look at LogMeIn on the PC for a perfect example of how it can be done. If the resolutions of the two screens are different, it allows you to either have it "Fit To Page" or allow it to scroll. PCs can use QVGA (320x240, almost never used by users nowadays), VGA (640x480), SVGA (800x600), XGA (1024x768), just to name a few. Also, a "Standard Definition" television does not use 640x480 (a common mistake). NTSC televisions use a resolution of 720x480, while PAL televisions use 768x576. This is the sole reason why you can't mix and match PAL and NTSC devices. --Kabili 09:13, 26 June 2008 (CEST)

Web browser

We know the DS has a few third party browsers now, but it would be nice to see a Wii one! (Could we port over Firefox or some other open source browser?)

Is Opera open source? A port of the PC one would be far superior than the Opera Channel, and Firefox, as without all its extensions firefox is nothing, whereas Opera is basically FF + All the good extensions. (sorry if I start a browser war :s). Muzer 10:17, 25 April 2008 (PDT)

Opera isn't open source; I disagree that this would be a lot of work for little benefit. Java support, downloading files, add in plugins and other things you can't do on the Internet Channel which would be definately worth it.
I think it depends on if you would really use it -- I agree it'd be cool to use Firefox on my Wii, but if I actually want to browse I get my laptop. And if you don't have access to a computer with the internet, you're not going to be able to get any Wii homebrew anyway! Opera is not free, I mean it's not a free software and it costs 500 wiipoints, port Firefox or a webkit based browser should be a lot of work but it also would be a great alternative to the bad Wii's Opera. Terloup2 10:32, 27 May 2008 (PDT)
The internet channel is very limited in terms of content (lack of video plugins, latest flash versions etc etc) and probably won't get updated all that often, so I'd support the idea of a homebrew browser. Especially if it could support local file browsing to allow viewing of files stored on the SD card (good for flash based games). And if it loaded faster, that would be a BIG plus. I haven't tried GC-linux, but the framebuffer works, no? Then surely DirectFB works on Wii, and Mozilla works on DirectFB, so a port would not be hard at all. Of course that would require a Wii network driver for GC-linux.--comex

E-mail Client

Wouldn't it be cool if we had a little POP3(or IMAP) e-mail client to check our e-mail on the wii. Maby a stripped down port of Outlook Express. No Tasks, To-do, or any of that crap. But a calendar would be nice!

Media Share over Network

I know there are some media players that play files from the SD card, but would it be possible to play them over the network?

wiimiidia was announced with support for network shares, think it worked via samba? anyway, you'll probably have to wait for that since no one else is really making anything media wise that I can think of because of it. JD 11:40, 23 June 2008 (CEST)

Would be very handy for media player apps. I've tried to port the amalgamated version (one huge .c file) but my programming skills are laughable and I've gotten nowhere.

Thanks. I did look through the code of PSP SQLite to get an idea of the basic functions that needed porting, but in the end almost all of the changes were small rewrites to the unix port and I bolted on some code that was "missing" from devkitPPC and libogc. The porting has come to a brief stop while I work on something else, but I'm hoping to find time to add a few hooks into libfat for full read-write sql support before I release. Real Guitar Hero

Guitar Realo? An application that plays real music notes based on input from the Wii 'Guitar Hero' guitar controller. Check out this video to see how it would look.

If anyone is interested in this project, check out The Guitar Zeroes. They have a program that works with Max/MSP to convert Guitar Hero Controller notes into real music notes. I believe Frets on fire is written in python.. Maybe another similar application would be a more suiting choice, freetar hero? Guitar zero? I don't know what language they're written in though..

Couldn't find any verification, there's barely any information on them anywhere. FoF seems to be the most popular and best documented. Powder Game

In case you haven't heard of powder game, you can find it at: (www.dan-ball.jp/en). Using the source of 2D Box or Wii Physics (if available), it would work very well on the Wii. Powder Game is a simulation game, where the physics of various elements are put into action. These elements include Powder, Water, Magma, Thunder, Wind / Air, Nitro, Soap, Metal, and so the list goes on. There are many reactions to discover as well. Powder Game on the Wii is a must as long as it's possible.

They all keep going on about a condition in the ToS for the Wii which says any software running on it will automatically become property of Nintendo? That condition sounds like it must be on the edges of the law anyway also if someone is to make an unofficial version, its got nothing to do with them and therefore Nintendo couldn't claim there whole project anyway?? Thanks for moving this discussion to here JD, this is much more sensible. That reminds me, personally I'd like to see the Sensible engine ported to Wii, or a clone there of, imagine Cannon Fodder with Wiimote support...

Anyway, it would be a good idea not only to encourage development through this page but to encourage something home-brew scenes tend to lack, collaboration. I know people do collaborate on projects but it tends to be erratic and close-circled, showing off personal coding skills is all good and well but think what could be achieved if more of the multi-skilled talent on this site where working together?

A folding@home client!

The PS3 has one,why not the wii? It'd need to be able to use more than the SD card. NAND or USB drive/usb hd?

The PS3 has one since the developers at Stanford wrote it. The Wii cannot have one until they write it for it. That would be a cool channel. "Wii Like To Fold". THey would have to talk to the big N first for the SDK and develop it as WiiWare. Pinball wizard 03:54, 24 June 2008 (CEST)
Also the PS3 has a cell processor which costs more than half a Wii. That basically means that a Wii basically sucks for these tasks, while PS3 kicks your computer's ass. (Remember:we are talking about calculation, not games ;-) ) --XaPi 22:10, 25 June 2008 (CEST)

SEGA Dreamcast Emulator

A DC emu would be nice for the Wii, especially a port of nulldc or Chankast so I can enjoy reliving playin' good ol' Sonic Adventure 2. SF49 04:07, 29 June 2008 (CEST)

Native XBMC

XBMC, specifically for the Wii, would be awesome. Definite prerequisites would be libraries like FreeType, ffmpeg, and something like SDL. The port could be made even easier with framebuffer support in GC-Linux; all that would need to be done then is a Linux PowerPC port. However, a native port (like running on the XBox) would be preferable. XBMC developers already have scripting for the Wii Remote.

Needed features would include many of those featured on this page: USB hard drive support, NFS streaming support, and DVD playing all come to mind. XBMC, however, provides all of these if the hardware/driver-level work is done. If there was ever a port, "nice-to-have" features would include full networking (like on a desktop, since the Wii has wifi) and a DS controller.

I, personally, have little to no programming capability, but am always willing to compile anything with a list of instructions. My Wii is always at the ready. zwaldowski 04:06, 11 July 2008 (CEST)

Gamecube Compaitbility

Nothing really new. I just hope that there will eventually be a way to launch a wii app that forces the wii into GC-mode and launches a certain dol file from the front SD slot when booting. It would be much easier to not have to work so hard porting GC apps by being able to just use the originals. I understand this would be no easy project and that many will see little or no point in it. however, there is great potential from an app like this.

Linking Wii systems for multi player (for example using Rin or VBA for the Wii in link cable mode) This is for all those who want to play multiplayer on the gameboy color/advance emulators on the wii. If we could use a usb link or even wifi it would be nice for pokemon, Zelda Four Swords and whatnot. Its just a suggestion.

IRC port

Maybe a port of a popular and free and open source irc chatting software so we can maybe go on #wiidev on our Wiis?
