The Photo Channel is a channel that has been installed on the Wii since System Menu 1.0, allowing users to use the Wii console to edit, share, display, and have fun with photos loaded onto your Wii through an SD card or the Wii Message Board. Edited photos can be saved to the Wii (the Wii will not overwrite data on the SD card) and sent to other Wiis via Wii Mail (which only works with RiiConnect24 after shutdown).

Formats Supported

According to the system's manual, the following file extensions (i.e. formats) are supported: Photos (jpeg/jpg), Movies (mov/avi), and Music (mp3/aac/m4a). JPEG files can be up to 8192x8192 resolution and in baseline format. Video data contained within the .mov or .avi files must be in an OpenDML compliant MotionJPEG variant of this format for videos. Photos, even high resolution ones, are compressed and decreased in resolution drastically when sent to the Wii Message Board.

Version 1.1

Main article: Photo Channel 1.1

A month after the 3.1 update was released, Photo Channel 1.1 was released in an update, together with a Wii Shop Channel release of Photo Channel 1.1 dummy. Both of these are separate channels with their own title IDs.

There is also a "v65280" of Photo Channel 1.0 that was released on some discs and comes with 2007 consoles and alter. It has only one content, the build content, which has tag MP3_photo_dummy.0708221150 and author ohizumi@TENMA. The WAD library explicitly blocks this version from being installed, so it is not clear why it was distributed on retail discs.
