One should purchase 480p if you want VGA output for almost all games, but some games(e.g. Gamecube and some wiiware[e.g. Megaman 9]) will only work on 480i. This means that if the cable you buy does not support the lower 480i, then you will not see anything when trying to play those games.

Also, you will not see anything if the wii is set to 480i beforehand; forcing you to move it back to your tv (if you have one available) to set it to 480p there. And since the wii menu is point and click, you can't do it blindly. (Unless you point and click by sound, which is what I did.)

The output vga conector may be either male or female, the male end plugs into a monitor(if your monitor has a native vga cable hanging out, you will need to purchase a plug to change its gender).The female one is like a vga video card connector, it connects any cable that you would normally connect to your pc.
