Before the MINI Kernel Preview 3 came out (with basic support of internal Wi-Fi), users were forced to use USB Ethernet Adapters and USB Wi-Fi dongles for an Internet connection. Supported external hardware is listed.
NOTE: The MIKEp3+ Kernels support Internal Wifi when loaded through MINI (bootmii). Internal Wi-Fi will not work if loading through any other method, forcing you to use the below hardware.
