Project name concerns
You might want to reconsiter the name "Wubuntu" for your project. I don't think that Ubuntu likes names like that without permission. See their trademark policy. Also, there is already something called Wubuntu out there. --Blooper (Talk) 02:52, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
- I hate to say this, but the name Wii Live might not be a good idea either because of Microsoft's Live line of products. I would suggest an alternative, but I can't think of any. --Blooper (Talk) 01:35, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
I agree on both of the above, Ubuntu's trademark copyrights both the name ubuntu or variations of it using the ending 'buntu', i also think wii live should be reconsidered due to the microsoft thing, how about something simple like wiinux? --NaeD
- I am considering the name "WiiMeet" as the goal it to Meet the best of 2 worlds: 1)Multimedia on tv and 2)basic computer tools. Sound good? Pinball wizard 01:43, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- What about WiiLife? --Cyndaquil 01:28, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

xfce desktop
Have you considered using the x desktop environment (ala xubuntu)? Its geared towards lower system requirements and might run faster on the wii. Also, if your looking to exchange code back and forth, I'm pretty sure there was a (recified) leak that showed xfce linux was using that desktop environment. I personally think it looks clunky (and bad) on a pc, but large buttons might be well suited for an environment in which many might choose to use the wiimote as their primary pointer device.
Also if this edit didnt turn out correct i apologize, i've never done anything on a wiki before. for the record i use ubuntu as my primary os on my pc, and am extremely excited to see any version of linux, esp ubuntu running on the wii! --Trotskii (Talk) 10:11, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
- It was my distribution that was leaked. I used openbox, as I didn't think xfce would run fast enough (judging by how well most apps run, I think I was right). Gnome would definitely fail. Miserably. Muzer 12:10, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
got this link from tehskeen
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20081113VL204.html
Comparing that to original ubuntu source code could help devs along a bit. (or maybe not, im not really sure what most of what i read means)
- Not helping me too much there except for low intensity usage of system resources. The problem is the ARM processor in only graphics not the main processor. Pinball wizard 22:11, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, the main processor (the one that Wii Linux currently runs on) is PPC, and that has loads of support. When BootMii comes we might need ARM support if we want to get it running on Starlet, I don't see much point though. Muzer 12:12, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
Miight
Good job and all, but we should really be combining our efforts rather than splitting them up. I have got really far on Miight, and would be welcome to let you help me out, just come onto IRC and PM me (nick Muzer or MuzerAway, I'm always online, if I'm away I will get the message). Come and speak to me and I'll give you a beta.
a couple of things that are already in miight:
- A kernel that should work with pretty much any filesystem you throw at it
- An easy-to-install X driver
- A kernel that loads the filesystem off a USB drive
- Wiimote drivers with fastsynch
- Neither a USB keyboard nor a USB mouse are required, though a USB keyboard is recommended
- Much much more
Therefore, I would much prefer for you to assist me in Miight, but if you absolutely positively don't want to, I will help you with this, though I don't see much point. Muzer 12:10, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
- Also, I don't see what you mean by this:
- "After seeing the lack of update from the Gamecube Linux team (even with such a great product, it has its faults), Pinball Wizard decided that there should be a new distribution that starts from the ground up, not pieced together, put together properly the first time, version of linux."
- What's wrong with piecing things together? It doesn't make the system any less stable or any more slow, and it saves a lot of work. And how is it not "put together properly"? Muzer 12:19, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I completly understand your thoughts so if I agree with your thoughts toward the goals of your distribution then I'll consider it. So if you'll send em' to me then I'll review em' Pinball wizard 01:41, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- My aims are:
- To get an easily usable, well documented, well-featured version of Linux on the Wii, with as many features etc as reasonably possible.
- There are four planned versions of the distro for varying uses:
- miight-full: Designed for people who mainly want to see what exactly the Wii is capable of, and have a large SD card (>=2GB). This will include all the default apps that the distros below have, as well as possibly some more.
- miight-practical: Designed for people who want to use their Wii for more practical uses. Will include all apps other than the apps in miight-gaming.
- miight-gaming: Includes only games and emulators. Designed for people who want to make use of Linux's massive game base, this distro will have every non-openGL game that people request, as well as some more such as Supertux (if nobody requests that :p)
- miight-core: Includes only the window manager, login manager, wiimote drivers, terminal, web browser, and everything that whiite has. This will be the "core" package for people with small SD cards who want to either install their own apps or just bask in the glory of linux (lol).
- I currently use the following apps in miight-core (if you want an applist for the other miight distros, I will give it to you).
- Login manager: xdm
- Window manager: openbox
- Wiimote drivers: wminput with isobel's hack
- Kernel: Latest from the gc-linux team, with nuvalo's modifications
- Everything that whiite has
- wiigpio: An easy-to-use app to control the disc slot, sensor bar, and eject the disc.
- Nuvalo's Xorg driver (the latest if I can get it to work, if not, the first one)
- Terminal: xterm
- Web browser: dillo
- Networking capability: Only Nintendo and Datel ethernet adaptors for the first release, but a later release will support USB WiFi dongles. Internal WiFi is considerably harder and will not even be attempted by anyone until BootMii.
- Panel: pypanel
- A few more custom scripts by me and other people
- Xscreensaver
- Custom desktop background by jbc
- It will be easy to install: nuvalo is very very kindly compiling a kernel that will make it possible to load a filesystem-in-a-file type thing, from any common filesystem, in either a USB drive or the SD card. The "normal" method of loading a filesystem, from a separate partition, will also be supported. Therefore, there will be four kernels, named thusly:
- whiite-isobel-sd-p2: The "stock" whiite kernel (the latest update albeit), which loads the ext2 or ext3 filesystem from partition 2 of the SD card.
- whiite-isobel-nuvalo-usb-px: A modification of the stock kernel by nuvalo, loads from either an unparitioned (raw filesystem) or partition 1 of a USB drive (ext2/3).
- whiite-isobel-nuvalo-sd-file: A modification by nuvalo again, loads the filesystem from an unencrypted dump of the filesystem from a file on the first SD partition or unpartitioned SD (raw filesystem). The "host" filesystem for the file can be any usual one (FAT16, FAT32, ext2, ext3, NTFS), and the "guest" filesystem from the file is ext3.
- whiite-isobel-nuvalo-usb-file: A modification by nuvalo again, loads the filesystem from an unencrypted dump of the filesystem from a file on the first USB partition or unpartitioned USB (raw filesystem). The "host" filesystem for the file can be any usual one (FAT16, FAT32, ext2, ext3, NTFS), and the "guest" filesystem from the file is ext3.
- Anything I've missed out, please feel free to ask, I'm not too good at stuff like this. Muzer 18:12, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- There are four planned versions of the distro for varying uses:
- Well I do really like your ideas, I truly do so don't take me as thinking of you at the wrong way but I still am leaning towards my own distribution. It is looking to be something close to yours but with a different angle. Plus it is a learning experience for me too ;). I do know that if this project ever gets scrapped I will definately want to help you out though. Your ideas are bold and I like that in a person. Pinball wizard 23:52, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
- What is this different angle? I could probably adapt Miight to work with that, as almost all of miight is complete and I just don't see a point in completely starting again. You could easily work with me, or me work with you if you do in the end choose to make your own, I just don't see a point in starting "from the ground up" (I assume you mean rewriting drivers inclusive) just to have a slightly differently-angled distro. Betatester
If you want, I can be a betatester, but I don't have a USB keyboard. Duhow
