FYI, WiiConnect24 is not an online networking service, some of what you describe applies to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. In particular, WiiConnect24 does not allow for online gameplay, only Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection does.
There's a big difference in the two services.

You're right, WiiConnect24 is for updates, messages etc even when in standby.
