The Internet Channel is a version of the Opera 9 web browser for use on the Wii by Opera Software and Nintendo. On December 22, 2006, a free "trial version" of the browser was released. The final version of the browser became available on April 11, 2007 and was free to download until the last day of June; after that the browser was available at 500 Wii Points until September 1, 2009 when it was available for free again.

April 11, 2007:

  • Upgraded to the full version.

October 10, 2007:

  • Added USB keyboard support.
  • Launch time has been reduced.
  • Up to 56 favorites can be saved.
  • Send Favorites to people in the Wii's Address Book.
  • Highlight words on a Web page and copy it to the "Search" function.
  • Type longer messages with reduced lag in the virtual keyboard.

September 1, 2009

  • Switched from Flash Player 7 to Flash Lite 3.1.
  • No longer have to pay 500 Wii Points to purchase.
  • The size has been reduced.

3.0 patch

3.0 included a patch for both existing releases by including an updated NAND Boot Program in IOS15 and IOS21. The patches are the same for both versions, but they are applied at different addresses; the MEM1 patch occurs at 0x8060af10 for the trial version, and 0x8063ecc8 for the full release. The MEM2 patch occurs at 0x8060b010 for the trial version, and 0x8063edc8 for the full version. This patch does not apply to the October 10 version, as it uses IOS34.

The Internet Channel, which allows everyone to easily access and enjoy the Internet, has been updated.

The main updates are as follows:
*Change from Adobe Flash version 7 to Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 (this corresponds to Adobe Flash version 8)
*The Internet Channel is now available to download for 0 Wii Points.

Press "Start" at the bottom right of the screen and you will be able to download the updated Internet Channel from the Wii Shop Channel.

If you previously used 500 Wii Points to download the Internet Channel to your Wii console, at the end of October we will be offering you the opportunity to download, for 0 Wii Points, one NES game of your choice (valued at 500 Wii Points) from the Virtual Console catalog. Details of this download offer will be provided via the Wii Message Board or on Nintendo.com soon.

Dear Customer, Nintendo would like to inform you that an update to the Internet Channel is available. Included in this update is a never version of Adobe Flash, making even more website content available to you.

Until now the Internet Channel was available to download from the Wii Shop Channel for 500 Wii Points. However, as Nintendo encourages all customers and their families to enjoy browsing from their sofas, the Internet Channel can now be downloaded for free.

For those that have purchased the Internet Channel for 500 Wii Points before, a special offer will be available from late October until the end of December. During this time period, you will be able to download a Virtual Console NES title worth 500 Wii Points for free.

When the exact time period for this offer is finalised, a notification will be sent out via the Wii Message Board and posted on the Nintendo of Europe Website.
