Introduction
Quoting the Kobo Deluxe official site, Kobo Deluxe is an enhanced version of Akira Higuchi's game XKobo for Un*x systems with X11. XKobo was a fastpaced multiway scrolling shoot-em-up. It was simple but clever and very addictive.
Kobo Deluxe adds sound, smoother animation, high resolution support, OpenGL acceleration (optional), an intuitive menu driven user interface, joystick support and other features. Recent versions also add a number of alternative skill levels with slightly modernized gameplay. Kobo Deluxe uses SDL for graphics, sound and input, which makes it possible to build and run the game on pretty much anything. That includes a Nintendo Wii :)
Installing
Kobo Deluxe for the Nintendo Wii comes in a Homebrew Channel friendly package.
Simply untar the archive kobodl-0.5.1-whiite.tar.gz on the root directory
of your homebrew SD card and it will create an apps/kobodl
directory
suitable for its use with the Homebrew Channel.
Running
Make sure that the SD card where you installed kobodl-0.5.1-whiite is inserted into the front SD card slot of your Nintendo Wii console. Start the Homebrew Channel, locate the Kobo Deluxe entry and click on its icon using the Nintendo Wii Remote, then click on the Load button.
Kobo Deluxe will start after a few seconds.
Important Cautions
- DO NOT REMOVE THE SD CARD WHILE PLAYING KOBO DELUXE.
- ALWAYS EXIT CLEANLY KOBO DELUXE, USING THE "QUIT KOBO DELUXE" MENU OPTION.
The SD card is mounted for reading and writing while the game is running. Physically removing the SD card or forcibly turning off your Nintendo Wii can potentially corrupt the filesystem of your SD card.
Control Bindings
Kobo Deluxe (whiite) can be controlled using a Nintendo Wii Remote. Just press any button on the Nintendo Wii Remote when the game is running to get it connected (yeah, that simple).

The game can also be played using a Nintendo Classic Controller (RVL-005) if connected to the Nintendo Wii Remote.

Mini FAQ
- Q: Where is the game configuration stored?
- A: The game configuration is stored in the file:
apps/kobodl/persistent/.kobodlrc
- Q: Where are the scores / player profiles stored?
- A: The scores and player profiles are stored in the directory:
apps/kobodl/persistent/scores
. - Q: I'm a god playing Kobo Deluxe. Will my incredible high score be lost?
- A: No, the
apps/kobodl/persistent
directory is... persistent. - Q: Why doesn't my console turn off when I press the wiimote power button?
- A: Pressing the Nintendo Wii Remote power button only powers off the Nintendo Wii Remote, not the console.
To turn off your console, exit Kobo Deluxe and once in the System Menu press the power button on your Nintendo Wii Remote or on your console. - Q: Can I change the wiimote/classic/nunchuk bindings?
- A: Yes, but you'll need to figure that by yourself, and if you screw something up it's your fault :-P
- Hints: kobodl.img.bz2,
/usr/local/etc/cwiid/wminput/kobodl

Oops, I forgot to include cwiid in the software used list section of the readme.txt... Sorry! Fixed now in the release notes.
