Questions

Could you tell me how you got the HBB to update it self?--HUN73R /\/\. 03:28, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

It firstly connects to the internet and checks a text file which contains the file size of the boot.dol. If this file size doesn't match the size the user currently has then it prompts the user to update. Then it just downloads the new boot.dol and meta.xml files to the correct location. There is a download example here: Homebrew Browser#NetSend Example + HTTP Download Example

I have used this program successfully many time launched from the SD card. I now wish to move my HomeBrew to my USB Drive. My first attempt was to have a WBFS partition fist with a Fat32 second on the Drive. That did not work so I tried moving the Fat32 to the first partition. That started to work but each time I Download an App the Wii crashes with a Stack Dump... Can this app run from a Fat32 partition of a USB Drive? Secondly with the WBFS as the second partition my WiiFlow USB loader would not see my files. But that is for another PAGE.--capple123 02:10, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Suggestions/Comments

How about having a version of UAE that can actually be downloaded with the HBB on the Wii? Don't know if it's an archive issue, it's both gunzip:ed and tar:ed when you download it from "here". e5frog

What about moving the apps section to another page? (I mean here on Wiibrew) The list is getting a little long, no? -- Tj cool

Replace the wii zapper icon for apps with a button called "more peripherals" that has information such as usb support. Toagac 12:33, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

I would really like to see this app use multiple threads to download. Downloading files can be painfully slow. :). --Sonicsleep 03:54, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Add Experts Tab

maybe there should be a tab for sistem apps like Any Title Deleter, StarPatch (all versions),Any Region Changer, etc.... With a warning when accesing it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiiman1 (talkcontribs) 03:44, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

How about the tab is password protected when you click on it a message pops up and says enter password. Gamewizard71 19:28, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
I think an extra tab for NAND-related apps would work sufficiently well, with that warning. A password is probably over-doing it. This'll definitely helps people (read: me). Keepsake 22:43, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Nah, a password would be best. Gamewizard71 01:51, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
But how would you get the password? --Mjbauer95 23:31, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't think a password would be useful. Just sufficient warnings with the right jargon to scare off people who don't know what they're doing, should be all that's needed. -Anachronist 15:03, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
I think it might be easier for me to just make a repo of all this non safe stuff rather than implement it. --Teknecal 13:32, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
Um.... why not a password? A password would protect a brother or stupid siblings from screwing up your wii. A password would be best and is neccasary. There's no reason why it should'nt be useful it makes comeplete sense. Why do you think they make pin#'s for CC cards? Not because they're not useful. They protect things from stupid people, who do stupid things. Actually teknecal should make the password therefore people dont screw up their wii unintended. We could just get the password from the codemii webpage or from this wiki... easy... simple.... bam! No hassle, no forgetting, and no stupidity! We do need it... because stupid people do stupid things and those kind of people exist. There's no reason why there should'nt be a password that just makes it alot safer. I don't "think" its useful. I KNOW its useful! -Gamewizard71 03:43, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
I agree, but no keyboard is required just a simple numpad with the ability to change the 4 digit pass! (just like parent control). --Elisherer 10:43, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
A password makes no sense. Your argument about CC pins makes no sense. Publishing the password makes no sense. What you're suggesting is limiting access to a tab by implemented an undocumented password. Then end result will be hundreds of people googling where to get this password and, within days, forums will be filled with the answer (and loads of GBAfail). If your little brother can shake a wiimote he can google HBB password. This effectively turns your password into an elaborate (and annoying) "Are you sure?" dialog. If we're creating fancy dialogs, why not actually use an "Are you sure?" dialog with a brief explanation of the dangers of the action and a timeout before the answer buttons activate so the user has to read it. Show this dialog every time a user queues up an application from the "dangerous" tab... or better yet, don't host dangerous apps. If you're smart enough to use the dangerous apps, you're smart enough to install them yourself. -- MetaFight 11:41, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
Teknecal has already planned to add a password to the repo. -Gamewizard71 02:11, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
If somebody really wanted to mess up your Wii they could just put the SD card into a computer and deleted all the files, or use WiiXplorer. Is he really planning on a password? It just seems stupid and complicates things more than they need to be (and we get enough of that from Nintendo already). So seriously, Teknecal, reconsider. --Mjbauer95 20:54, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
It won't have a password, it will just be another repo. If you would like I can assist anyone who wants to get this sort of repo out, you will need your own website though. --Teknecal 08:50, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
My repo now contains several of these apps. It also has a cool website. :P [1] - will probably be made opensource. If I've violated the license of any of the app owners, please let me know on my talk page. --Lukegb 03:39, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Homebrew Browser Channel

I haven't done much lately with this but now I have a working compiler again so the installer is getting closer. The channel on the other hand is killing me. I am stuck with getting weird debug info like HBB used to give. Any help on how to read those Teknecal? Pinball wizard 01:19, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Does it say like debug [1] Not owner? I think that the fix is to format the SD card. --Teknecal 13:19, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
It isn't debug info I put it wrong. I meant to say Code Dumps. It looks to be all hex code. Check your pms too. Pinball wizard 19:06, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
The installer is getting closer. I have all the code checking out okay but I think that my development environment is having problems. Closer now though. Still have the channel issues. Hoping to maybe release before I die, lol. Pinball wizard 19:35, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm now doing debugging on the installer. If I can figure the channel issue out and approval from Teknecal, I should release soon.*@Teknecal, The issue with the channel is that it shows the kind of code dump as what you have at the end of your 1 year anniversary video. I am going to add in some debug code to see if it is the channel launch code or HBB code. Do you know what IOS HBB runs on? Pinball wizard 20:39, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm cleaning up code for the installer now, commenting out debug info and about to lock down the installer to the final channel pieces now instead of anything you want. I need to put some placeholder logo spots and finish recoding the code for the channel. I have a list of testers and should be ready to beta test in a week. @Teknecal, Don't worry about anything with your app just yet. I think I found the issue in the channel launching check your pms for details on it. After beta tests I will shoot you up for approval and I should have release 1.0 out very soon. Disabling bald character option

I can't think anything wrong with this app, it works like a charm, however I find the bald d-pad facec a little out the place, I don't know, there's a possibility to make an option to disable this character?, the menu is pretty customizable right now, so I though this could be easy. OpenBOR credits mistake

Thanks for adding OpenBOR to the Homebrew Browser! However, I've noticed that it only lists SX as the author. This is not quite correct, as I (Plombo) did much of the work on the Wii port of OpenBOR, especially the controls. Would you mind adding me to the "Author" field? Sorry if this is in the wrong place. --Plombo 06:56, 1 February 2010 (UTC) No problem, I've added you as an author. --Teknecal 11:54, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Unable to initialize FAT subsystem OPEN

I just installed Homebrew (1.0.3, IOS61 v19.26) and also the Homebrew browser last night for the first time. I've been experimenting with this error message I keep getting when I start the Homebrew Browser: Unable to initalize FAT subsystem, exiting.

At first I thought it had something to do with files left over from the Homebrew installation. So I deleted the boot file and the "private" folder, and the Homebrew Browser started up. Problem solved! Well, no....

However, the problem returns after running certain apps. Double Dash Wii, for example, always crashes when I attempt to start a game, and after that Homebrew Browser will fail to run. WiiXplorer is another example of an app that causes Homebrew Browser to fail to run.

I thought it might make a difference if I formatted the SD card from Windows XP rather than Windows Vista, but it didn't seem to make a difference (other than the Vista format took several minutes for an 8 GB card, and XP took a couple seconds). I'm using FAT32.

If I copy my apps folder to my PC desktop, reformat the SD card, and restore the apps folder to the SD card, Homebrew Browser will start properly... until I run certain other apps like Double Dash Wii. Some apps, such as Mahjongg Wii, cause no problems. -Anachronist 16:16, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Update: It appears that any app that needs to write data to the SD card will cause Homebrew Browser to abort, and other apps that need to write to the SD card will similarly fail to run. Apps that don't write to the SD card work just fine. Anyone have any idea what may be the problem? Anachronist 04:00, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
I can't be sure if this is related, but I have issues with corrupted files after using Homebrew Browser. It usually shows up as a bad scummvm.ini, or a bad save game from some other app, so it appears to affect the last files written to the card before Homebrew Browser is run. If I run chkdsk on the card, it recovers copies of Homebrew Browser's settings.xml padded with the word "Test" as lost chains. This is a 4GB card formated FAT32. --8bitHacker 01:07, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
Still having the same issue. I have attached a zip file with the chkdsk stdout and a copy of the lost chains here File:LostChains.zip. The lost chains appear to contain the meta.xml, and my meta.xml in homebrew_browser is zero bytes. 8bitHacker 20:24, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
Can you format, etc, and then try v0.3.7 and see how that goes? Does it happen every time you run HBB? --Teknecal 23:00, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay. I had installed v0.3.7 on Jan 19. The meta.xml file was corrupted when I installed, and my last set of lost chains may have been from that date. Since then I haven't found a problem. I can launch and exit HBB fine. I've tested installing single apps, installing multiple apps in a batch, and upgrading an existing app. So far the filesystem has tested clean after each operation. 8bitHacker 03:43, 12 February 2010 (UTC)
This may need its own section as I have been getting the same lost chains for weeks. I just recently updated my card from FAT to FAT32. Bman 02:53, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
chalk me up as another one with the lost chain issue. --Yossi 05:41, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

The Little Globe Comes on To tell me im connected to the intrenet, When i connect to the intrenet through homebrew browser it connects succsessfully then it tells me : Finding www.codemii.com's ip adress. then it errors and says unable to find ip adress using stored one or somthing. and it sits there for like thirty miniutes and never moves... please help C.j Allen —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiihakks101 (talkcontribs) 11:52, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Can you ping codemii.com from your PC in the same network? -Charlatan 01:09, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm having the exact same issue. www.codemii.com is accessible from my laptop, but not from the Homebrew Browser. Thinusp 08:57, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Can you try using a different DNS server in your Wii settings? --Teknecal 13:39, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Error Codes OPEN

Probably not the right section, but I keep getting the error codes -81, -27 and -22, could a list be made so that users can identify their meaning? --ColdPerson 14:17, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Working with Categorii OPEN

I saw that you mentioned trying to support the multiple apps directories (ie: apps*) but I couldn't find anything more about it and the latest entries do not mention anything.

I posted a sample directory setup on the Categorii page and with that all the user has to do is run the HBB from any section (Please let me know if it is not ok to redistribute?). All that HBB has to do is put the downloads into the appropriate other folders (eg: apps_demos, apps_emulators, apps_games, apps_media, apps_utilities) or into the apps folder if the "other" folder does not exist (because it is being used). It would also be worth moving the HBB data folders up two levels (eg: \HBB| so that all instances can share the data rather than having several copies of it). From the users perspective, they would do virtually nothing - just download and it goes into the category directory if it exists, or just goes to apps. For those with downloads already (like me), they can simply drag the sub-folders from the apps directory into the apps_xxx directory or simply delete then and end up re-downloading

If you haven't guessed, I'm really keen on this - Could I get an update please on your plans? --Sorky 02:18, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes I am planning to add categorii support like you have mentioned. There will be a setting in HBB to enable this. I do agree that it's also a good idea to put the HBB temp files in /HBB/. --Teknecal 07:41, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
You are a star - Thanks heap - Love your work! --Sorky 15:15, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
Actually now I'm starting to make my own kind of categorii application which lets you add/remove apps to the categories from the Wii directly. Will be open source so anyone can make their own category names. --Teknecal 02:05, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
If I may be so bold as to suggest that you allow the directory that is compared & downloaded to be specified for each group (eg: Media=apps_m, Games=apps_g - The default for all could just be apps so that it works as is unless specified). This would work for Categorii and hopefully would link in to whatever you decide to do as well.

HDD problem OPEN

I used a partitioned (2) HDD. I am able to launch the browser from Homebrew Channel, but when its mounting devices it doesnt mount the HDD. This also happens with Dragon media player. The first partition is in a format i will not mention here, wich homebrew channel (or pc) dont recognice. Partition 2 is 22GB FAT32, wich is where HBB is. Yet WiiExplorer works fine. DMP does'nt display USB/.

I posted this from my wii so signature is'nt here. I'll add it later. WiiMAN1 october 3 2009 19:11

Regardless of what this peculiar other partition is, the FAT32 partition should be the first partition. Helsionium 18:30, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Problem opening "Emulator" section {Talk:Homebrew Browser/Solved}}

Hi. well, every time I open the Emulation side of the Browser, it will just close and go back to the Homebrew channel. This has happened ever since I got the new update. please fix this. thanks. --Vilapupu 21:05, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I can't say I'm experiencing this issue. Can you zip up the /apps/homebrew_browser/temp directory, store it somewhere and then remove that directory and run HBB? If this fixes the issue, can you email me the zip file? teknecal@gmail.com Thanks.--Teknecal 11:48, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

- I'm actually going to delete that whole "temp" folder and leave it blank. I'll tell you when the problem is fixed. ^^ --Vilapupu 06:26, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

- UPDATE: yeah, this fixed the problem. So, I guess there was probally some bad image file that goes in the "Emulation" part of the program. fixed. ^^ --Vilapupu 05:38, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Queue Bug? OPEN

I found a minor bug that you could fix in 0.3.9. If you add an app to queue then open up the "Download/Delete Queue" page, the app you selected will be there. But if you delete it from the list (By pressing -) and open the Download/Delete Queue page again, the name and short description will still be there, but not the icon. Again a very minor bug, but one that should be fixed. Keep up the good work!--Jrcolonial98 19:30, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

USB-HDD works, but icon download is extremely slow compared to SD OPEN

I also use a USB-HDD with a FAT32 on the 1st partition, with no SD Card whatsoever (my card slot is defective), and I noticed that HBB takes several minutes to update all the app icons. On a friend's Wii, I could see that this process takes only a few seconds, but unlike me, his HBB is in his SD Card. This has been like this since the days of HBB 0.3.5, and as of HBB 0.3.8, it hasn't changed. In spite of this, HBB works as expected, and code dumps are rare, but do occur, occasionally. --Friiloader 23:53, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
